In a letter dated October 10th, 1818, British traveler William Harris observed “a large covered skiff with a family on board bring to,” whereupon Harris “hailed the man with the usual salutation of an American” and discovered that “his intention was to settle”. In the same letter Harris also jotted down his impressions of a settlement further downriver. “We reached Madison, seat of justice for Jefferson County, Indiana, a town of rapid growth, well built of brick, and, from the quality of the neighboring country, having a fair prospect of increase.” (Travel Accounts of Indiana 1679-1961, Indiana Historical Collections Volume XLVII, compiled by Shirley McCord, 94.)
